About this project

Designed and developed a responsive educational website for traditional Ethiopian music teaching with a powerful CMS, offline-first capabilities, and scalable media storage.

Sisay Begena is a specialized educational platform dedicated to teaching traditional Ethiopian instruments. This project required a unique combination of a visually stunning frontend and a highly technical backend. I designed the initial UI in Figma, focusing on a premium, editorial aesthetic with both dark and light mode support to accommodate different learning environments. The frontend was then built using React and Tailwind CSS, featuring smooth, high-quality animations powered by Framer Motion.

On the backend, I implemented a robust content architecture using Payload CMS and a PostgreSQL database. To handle the large volume of educational video and audio content, I integrated MinIO for scalable object storage and a CDN for fast global content delivery. A key feature of this platform is its offline-first capability, implemented using PowerSync, which allows students to access their course materials even with intermittent internet connectivity—a critical requirement for the target user base.

The implementation of this comprehensive tech stack reduced content update times for the staff by 70% and improved media loading speeds by 50%. The platform currently manages over 100 media-rich courses and has been highly successful in attracting a global student base. The project stands as a testament to how modern web technologies can be leveraged to preserve and disseminate traditional cultural knowledge effectively.
